Mission:
Will Your Artwork Get Hung?
The will try to hang everything I delivered. They promises that each artist will have at least one painting hung. If not all of your artwork is hung, it doesn’t mean anything about the quality of your art. Sometimes they hold art out to replenish stock when works are sold. Or because of space limitations.
If any of your works are not hung, do you want the work returned to you at the reception, or put in reserve to be hung when other works are sold. Please let me know.
Do no expect all of your artwork to be hung together. It might be spread all over the place. That’s out of our control.
Insurance You understand that your artwork is not insured. You can purchase insurance on your own if you wish.
Art Sales
55% goes to artist, 45% goes to Local Color. For those of you who may be shocked by this arrangement, I can assure you that it is normal. We have been quite lucky that other locations have no taken a sales cut.
Local Color will handle all sales and pay me after the show comes down, and I will cut a check to the artists then. We will not know who has sold anything until the show comes down, so I will not know.
There is also a $10 submission fee. See below.
Action Dates:
I need your artwork information, sent to me in an email, by June 1, 2018.
In this format:

. . . and so forth.
The title of your work and your name must appear clearly on the back of your painting. It’s also a professional practice that should be done regularly anyway.
Art Delivery Dates
Deliver your art any of these class times at Artist and Craftsman:
(Delivery dates to be confirmed soon.)
Thursday, May 31, 2 pm to 7:00 pm.
Friday, June 1, 10 am to 12:30 pm
Saturday, June 2, 10 am to 12:30 pm.
I will be delivering the work to the gallery the following week.
Your painting Schedule
Art must be bone-dry when hung. Tacky is unacceptable. You must factor into your timing that oil paint takes several days to dry. A finish glaze coat can take up to 3 days to dry. You must also factor in edge drying, framing time, photoing time, etc. I have learned to simply make sure my art is ready to hang at least one week before it is actually due to hang. That way I avoid a crazy rush as the deadline looms.
Requirements
You are required without exception, to attend the opening reception on Saturday, June 9th, from 5 pm to 6 or 7 pm.
Eligibility
You must be invited by myself or Kathy Kimball
Artwork Jury
You are to self-jury your artwork. That is, you are to decide which works are worthy to be in the show. Consider these questions:
1. We only show our best artwork. Is what you are submitting your best work?
2. Are you ready to have the public scrutinize and comment on your work?
Originality
Artwork must be entirely original, not copies of someone else's photos or paintings. Unless you have their consent. But it is always better if it is your personal inspiration.
No digital prints of your paintings are allowed. Actual printmakers are welcome.
Artwork Preparation
Artists must submit artwork that is framed and has a professional appearance and is ready to hang. Or the edges of the painting are painted well so as to have a professional, clean appearance. Hanging wire must be attached to the back so the artwork can hang on a hook. The cafe has rejected works in the past that did not have wire.
If you purchase a prefabricated frame and it does not come with wire then you must attach a wire yourself, or have a framer do it for you
How to Wire A Painting
Here is a video on how to attach wire on the back of a picture frame:

Framing
You can frame your art yourself or have it done professionally.
Never have glass over an oil or acrylic painting. If a prefabricated frame comes with glass, set the glass aside. Only works on paper require glass. If a prefabricated frame comes with a mat, set the mat aside. You don’t want to cover any more of your painting than is necessary.
You can buy prefab frames at:
Artist & Craftsman Supply
Blick Art Supplies
Frame Central
Aaron Brothers
Michaels
Annie’s Art and Frame, Ballard
and many other locations
Professional Framing
If you choose to have your framing done professionally, factor in that it will add one or two weeks to your show preparation schedule. If you use a pre-fab frame the total cost will be under $50-$100, depending on size. If you have custom framing done the cost will be over $200.
How many paintings should each artist submit?
About 1, 2 or 3
Quality always makes a greater impression than quantity.
At the Reception
Don’t bring anything. Local Color sells food and drinks. They would prefer that we buy from them. Sounds fair given that they are letting us show there. Consider making a purchase of a beverage or something. They might (?) put out cheese and eats for us. If so, please have some. It’s also a good practice to acknowledge the manager there who hangs the show and prepares eats for us.
Size of Art
Maximum size is 21” x 21”
Local Color is a bustling cafe in the heart of Pike Place Market and we are showing June and July, the most busy time of year for tourism. The best size for art is a size that will fit in carry-on luggage. Which is 11 x 14, 12 x 16, or so. Keep your art within that size if you want to appeal to the tourists. If not, keep it small-ish anyway, like 21”x 21” and under.
What sells?
It’s hard to say, but when I spoke to them last, they said that touristy things do not sell very well.
Hanging the Show
I will deliver all the artwork to Local Color in my van. The manager at the gallery, Julia, will hang the show. After the show comes down I will bring the artwork back to Artist and Craftsman.
Art Pricing
At Emerald City Art Club (ECAC) shows, paintings have sold for as little at $25 and for as much as $300. If you want your work to sell, price your paintings on the lower end, and factor in their 45% commission. And add the cost of framing when determining your sale price. If your artwork does not sell please do not take that as a sign that the artwork is not good. Sales have never been an accurate indicator of good art. Remember, you are doing this for fun and community, not to make a living.
The sale price must be an amount that you will feel ok about after the transaction. Never price your artwork so low that you feel bad about it after it has sold.
Also, bring lots of friends and family. They like to support artists they know.
The management prefer that all paintings are for sale. Some paintings have been held out because they were not for sale.
Marketing
A poster/flyer will be sent to you about two weeks before the show to post and send everywhere. Invite all your friends and family to the show!
Stay Informed
There are always critical updates in the run-up to a show. So please check your emails for any updates I may send.
Please let me know if you have any questions, if they are not found here.

Artist Show Submission Fees
$10 per person.
Why a fee? Because the cafe will charge me a $100 hanging fee. Plus, I usually accrue incidental expenses like parking, gas, cardboard, etc. I do not charge for my time coordinating the show, meetings with the cafe owner, delivering and picking up your artwork. It is a free service I offer to my students who are committed to their painting practice and my teaching program. I prefer that you pay below instead of adding the fee to your credit card that I have on file. It helps me keep my books straight.
